Not my favorite Coben novel
Every other book I’ve read by Harlan Coben I was totally in love with, so this one felt like a letdown. It wasn’t my favorite.
Wow. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.
Wow. I have read all of Harlan Coben’s “Bolitar” novels, and adored them. Gorgeously written, fascinating characters and plots. Stunning accomplishments. But, they did not even remotely prepare me for THIS. “FOOL Me Once”. Wow. It is now one of my top ten favorite books. Ever. And, I read six books a week. I am Fifty years old. But, this book is astounding. Utterly audacious yet entirely plausible. Shocking, surprising, thrilling, moving, and laugh-out-loud funny. This book is so astounding that when my jaw wasn’t hanging open, I was either laughing my butt off or wiping the tears from my face. The sheer courage it must have taken to write this book. Audacity meets unparalleled literary craft. Forget all of those “Girl” books that become international sensations; “Gone”, “On A Train”, “With The Dragon Tattoo”, “Who Hungrily Eat A Sandwich”, THIS is THE mystery-thriller of the NEW MILLENNIUM. Also, of note, this is the very first time “The Way This Novel Ends” – and I certainly won’t give it away here – has been JUST right and completely satisfying. Shocking, yes. Sad, YES. But, also, completely correct, earned, inevitable, oddly comforting and GORGEOUSLY BRAVE. The book could have, in an epilogue, undone the perfection of it’s ending. I’ll bet there were editors and publishers who encouraged Mr. Coben to write such a prologue. Regardless, the fact that he DIDN’T gives me hope for The American Novel. You MUST read this book. You simply must. It is a living testament to the fact that popular entertainment can be art. That art can be a story. That a story can, as all good art can do, change you. I am not exactly the same person I was before reading “Fool Me Once”. Something of indeterminate size and importance, shifted inside me. And, most of all, I would like to thank Mr. Coben for trusting US enough to write this book.
whose scale elevates above the best authors in the business
It’s hard to give a Harlan Coben novel less than five stars.I give this one only four because it’s not quite as compelling as most of his others. Coben has a formula, and fans know from page one that there will be information disclosed toward the end of the plot that virtuously no one will have expected. I suspect that he must start by constructing the end and wrapping it in information that misdirects the reader. Then he creates compelling characters with whom everyday people can relate and tortures them mentally and emotionally. Even though I give this book four stars, it’s only because it’s competing with other Harlan Coben novels, whose scale elevates above the best authors in the business.
Excellent story with many twist
Picked up this book because my daughter was reading it. It was interesting to learn the main character was military. Which might be why my daughter enjoys the book as she just happens to be a current member of the Army herself. I found the story to be complex yet fun to read. It had several twist in it and just when I thought I had it figured out it changed again. Would definitely read another of these to see if the same intrigue is a theme in every book.
Looking for closure
